The Dangers of Compromising Creativity

As we near the end of the year, I always like to reflect back on the year both to find where I can improve and celebrate successes.  Today I want to talk about a place that all creatives can improve on.  Compromises.

When shoots are planned, I put myself in a creative head space to begin to visualize the final product.  More often than not compromises occur where I have to reset and begin that process all over again.    As creatives I think this is our biggest hurdle.  The technical issues can be worked through, equipment can be rented, more talent can be hired.  But compromising on the artistic vision is hard to recover from.    To push our careers farther we need to trust in the vision and execute to that standard.  Things like location changes, concept changes and work arounds due to various issues.

I am about to leave the country until next year, so this post will remain short as I prepare for a trip to reset and reenergize.  With this I am making a promise to myself to not allow these compromises.  Your client will be happier in the long run and the results much more powerful. I leave you with this quote from Austin Kleon's fantastic book "Steal like an artist".  “You don’t want to look like your heroes, you want to see like your heroes.”    Make the promise with me and lets succeed in 2018!
